Karen Pipke, of Edmonton, Alberta passed away on January 1, 2012 of an aortic aneurism at only 48 years of age. She was well known for her Hycrest Havanese and Shetland Sheepdogs.
J. Allan Marshall of Woodstock, Ontario passed away in his 87th year on December 29, 2011. Allan was owner/breeder of Solar Kennels Doberman Pinschers, life member of of the Canadian Kennel Club and was the president of the Oxford County Kennel Club. His obituary can be viewed at yourlifemoments.ca
CKC Director Anita R. Cairns passed away on Sunday, October 23, 2011. Anita was elected to the CKC Board of Directors in 2003. During her time as a Director, Anita served as Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee, as well as serving on the CEO Review Committee and as Chair of the Conformation Council. Previously, Anita had also spent nine years on the Discipline Committee as well as being an active participant within the fancy. Anita was a Life member of the CKC, an All Breed Judge since 1966 and one of the founding members of the Collie Club of Canada. She owned, showed and bred the Top Winning Collies in Canada and sat on the Board of the Collie Club of America. Her success as a self-employed business woman allowed her the freedom to be involved with other philanthropic endeavours beyond the CKC and serve as one of the first Board members of the CKC Foundation.

Lorne Mackie, breeder of Irish Setters and All Breed Judge passed away on September 20th. Lorne gave a lot to the dog community, he was well respected, judged all over the world and was a real softy when it came to puppies.
Ric Chashoudian passed away on September 20th due to complications with diabetes. He was a handler, a breeder, a judge and an artist, known mainly for terriers but could find a good dog of any breed. His sculptures are collector's items. There will be a Memorial Service at Montgomery County KC show in October.
The Canadian Dog Fancy lost Stan Whitmore on March 18th. He was in his 91st year.
Jim Kilgannon, a lifetime member of the Edmonton Kennel Club, passed away January 9, 2011. A service will be held on January 15, 2011 at 1:00 at Appel's, 10530 - 116 St. N.W., Edmonton, Alberta.
Jim was an EKC member from 1939 and served on the Club's executive numerous times. He was very active with the Club and a great storyteller. He used to tell friends how he and Wally Jacob travelled to dog shows on the train.
Jim was an all-breed judge who judged around the world. He and his wife Mary Anne were also very active in field work with their Chesapeake Bay Retrievers.
All-breed and obedience judge, Merlin (Van) Van De Kinder passed away at his home in the early morning on January 1, 2011. He suffered a massive heart attack. Van started judging in the early 1960s. He was always well respected for his quiet, professional demeanour and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Susan Fegan, long-time Ibizan Hound breeder and former Borzoi breeder, passed away on the weekend of Nov. 20/21. She had been suffering from breathing problems for some time and had had several surgeries over the last year or so, breathing somewhat better. A friend took her to a dog show, movie and dinner. On the drive home Susan asked her friend to pull over and call 911. She was dead before the emergency vehicles arrived.
Long time breeder and Scottish Terrier entusiast Mr. Matheison of Olds, AB passed away in his sleep Monday evening, November 8. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends. The Matheison family bred Scottish Terriers under the Tarabelle prefix. Our deepest condolences to his family.
Marguerite E. Charter passed away peacefully at her own home on Sunday, September 26, 2010 at the age of 84 years and will be greatly missed by Emmett, Brodie and Boomer. Marguerite was an obedience and tracking judge with the Canadian Kennel Club for over 50 years. She touched many lives as an elementary school teacher with the Brantford Board of Education and served as Chairman of the Brantford Board of Education in 1968. If wished, memorial donations to the Brant County Unit of the SPCA gratefully appreciated.
Jo E. Shurb, wonderful mother of Gerri and Judi Shurb and, by proxy, Carla, passed away "peacefully with the kids barking in the background and her favorite TCM on the tele." There will be no service, by her wishes. She always hated to see people cry and we all know that's when "The Mom" mode kicked in, with everyone feeling better, knowing that Mom really did care.
Pete Faucher passed away on September 16 following some on-going health issues which, when diagnosed, could not be treated successfully. He has been well known in the BC show rings where he was an all-breed handler specializing in German Shepherds. He was well liked by everyone he met.
Marilyn Brotherton of Aisling Perm. Reg'd Kerry Blue Terriers in Manitoba passed away on Wednesday Aug 11, 2010. Marilyn was predeceased by her husband Robert on January 26, 2009. Marilyn and Bob were involved with breeding and showing Kerry Blue Terriers for over 40 years. Many great Kerries of today carry some of the Aisling line within their pedigrees. Through the on-line business, Pinnacle Pet Supply, Marilyn made connections throughout the world. Her remaining Kerry "Reagan" (Ch. Aisling's Overdrive) still thrives at 14+ years and has been adopted by Kim Hamill, who has been taking care of him since Marilyn was unable to do so.
Tom Leblanc, husband of Kim Ramey-Leblanc of Snowmist Siberians, passed away August 12th. He was diagnosed with cancer last June and while he was not expected to beat it, his passing has come earlier than expected. Kim & Tom raced Siberians for years, and bred racing Siberians under the Snowmist prefix as did Kim's mother Beryl.
We are very sad to announce the passing of Dr. Fred Edlin, Ridgeside Borzoi, NJ of a heart attack on August 11th. Fred has not only been an icon in the breed but has written a book (Your Borzoi) about Borzoi and also taken his place in the centre of the ring as a judge. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and all of us in the Borzoi world.
We are sad to announce the passing of Gerona MacCuaig on Tuesday August 3rd at the Belleville General Hospital after a very short bout with cancer.
Ron Heck, husband of terrier breeder and judge Darle, died suddenly and unexpectedly at on July 19th. He was at home and with his son Ryan and wife at the time of his passing.
Irene Swartman of Melrene Miniature Longhair Dachshunds, North Gower, ON passed away Sunday July 18th in her 97th year. Irene's Miniature Longhaired Dachshund Multi BIS BISS Am & Can & Bda Ch. Melrene's Demi Golden Knight "Denny" still holds the Miniature Longhair Dachshund record in Canada set in the 80s. Irene was a lifetime member of the Canadian Kennel Club and one of the early members of the Eastern Canada Dachshund Club.
Mrs. Joan Brazier, a well known and admired all-breed judge and mother of American professional handler Tim Brazier, passed away in Vancouver at the end of May after a long illness. She had just achieved her 90th birthday.
Another icon in the Borzoi breed, Lorraine Groshans of Chapel Hill, NC, passed away from a heart attack on May 11th. Lorraine was also a judge and wrote the book The Complete Borzoi. She will be missed in the Borzoi community and by her family and friends.
On May 22nd Corky Vroom passed away at home. The dog community also lost Pat Ide, Huzzah Greyhounds.
